Enjoying Entrepreneurial Freedom

By Lauren

For 6 years during my mid to late 20’s, I worked for the county’s Agency on Aging as a caseworker. My last year I did nursing home assessments, but for 5 years I went out into the community to assess the support needs of senior citizens. Generally speaking, I loved my job. I felt like I was making a difference in peoples’ lives, and every day was different.

What I didn’t like was the 30+ page questionnaire I had to fill out for each client I saw, the restrictions on what I could and couldn’t do, and basically the obligation that I “had to” go out on every case that came across my desk. I had to visit the beautiful houses in Hershey, PA, the public housing projects in downtown Harrisburg, and the suburbs in between.

Wednesday night I had a dream that I was working at Aging again. I was in a client’s home and there were roaches scurrying everywhere (not far-fetched in my previous line of work), I was really annoyed that I had to fill out this far-too-long report, when I could use my professional judgement and save everyone time.

When I woke up yesterday morning, I was overwhelmed with relief that I didn’t have to go to work there. At the time, I enjoyed my job, and I learned a lot from it. But nothing, I mean, nothing, beats getting to work for yourself, determining your own procedures and picking your client base.

I’m so glad I am a virtual assistant and enjoying Entrepreneurial Freedom.
