Taking the Book One Step Further

Greetings everyone – been a while since either Lauran or I have added to this website. We’re both very business with our VA practices and volunteering within the industry.

Just wanted to give everyone a quick update about the book. We have established the book and workbook in several community colleges in the Continental US, and are working on several more. If you have a Communitiy College in your area that’s looking to add this to their curriculum, don’t keep us a secret. In fact, other VAs have taken the book to their Community College and are teaching the class – extra income, and helps to build your expertise. :)

This past January, after several years of coaching and mentoring, I started a Virtual Assistance Coaching business. It has been very well received. I now offer three ways to assist start-up, or established VAs support and growth for their businesses.

One-on-One Coaching – an intensive 12-week program that focuses on your specific needs and helps you to re-invent yourself and/or your business, or take it to where you always dreamed it could go – for more, click here!

Group Coaching – for the established VA, working full-time, this group coaching model connects VAs to experts each month on topics that will help them to increase their success and grow a profitable business. They get the monthly sessions via CD along with a verbatim transcript so they can check back whenever they need to move forward. There’s also a Q&A segment or group discussion after the presentation, and I provide homework to continue to keep you accountable for making your business prosper. Members also get an opportunity to speak with me one-on-one on a designated date/time. More here!

Business Essentials for a Virtual Assistance Practice – this is the program I developed to teach at the St. Louis Community Colleges. It utilizes the book and workbook and over a 10-week program will take start-ups and those who are looking to take their business to the next level, a step-by-step process to establishiing or growing their practice. This teleclass offers several 90-minute sessions just for questions, and has lots of bonuses (over $1,050 in value) for those completing the program. Find out more here!

Overall, this has been a very active 2009 for me, and I see the climate for VAs growing and growing. Now is the best time for you to consider starting or growing a Virtual Assistance (VA) practice. The economy has allowed us to come to the forefront as a viable option for small, medium, and large businesses. Enjoy the ride!

Fun article on firing clients

Rich McIver emailed me yesterday and alerted me to this article on “Top 10 Ways to Fire the Client from….”

I wish I could say that VAs never had to fire their clients. But I’ve done it, and I know many other VAs who have found it necessary, too. Happy reading!

Cultural Business Trends

Scott Ginsberg, of “Hello, My name is Scott” fame (the guy that wears a nametag everywhere), wrote a great article on 35 Cultural Trends that (should) Change the Way you do Business. The main ideas from this is that you need to be approachable and personable, consistent, easy to do business with, and engage your customers with positive interaction. I would venture to add that this is even more important in a virtual work model. 97% of communication is non-verbal. What are you doing to instill confidence and trust in your clients?

Interesting article on the positive outlook for freelancing

According to this article at MSN Careers, many employers are receptive to paying for freelancers, and one in ten are willing to pay $100/hour or more for specialized help. That’s good news for virtual assistants!

“Where do I sign up to get work?”

As a director on the Board of IVAA, an author, and an active participant on VA groups and forums, VA newbies will often ask where they sign up to get work. Huh? Unfortunately, some people don’t research what is involved in becoming a virtual assistant and instead think they are becoming a telecommuter–and that someone will find work for them.

The reality is that virtual assistants are independent business owners and responsible for marketing and finding their own clients. That is often the hardest part of being a VA and one business aspect that takes careful planning and consistent effort. Take out your Entrepreneurial Freedom book and turn to Chapters 4 and 6 now, then share with us your own favorite marketing and networking tips.

VA inspirational quote of the day

Success in business requires training and discipline and hard work. But if you’re not frightened by these things, the opportunities are just as great today as they ever were.
David Rockefeller
US banker (1915 – )

I heard this on the Dave Ramsey show today. Isn’t this true when it comes to the virtual assistance profession? We are very lucky to be living in a time when we can run a business from our home. 15 years ago, this business model didn’t exist. But just the fact that virtual assistance is a great, flexible career, doesn’t mean it’s easy. You have to learn from others, continually add to your knowledge, and be dedicated to the success of your business.

Colleges are beginning to offer the Entrepreneurial Freedom course. If you would like to do the home-study version, you may order the book and workbook here.

Entrepreneurial Freedom book and workbook now in community colleges!

Look for a press release coming soon with all the details. Entrepreneurial Freedom has been adopted by a community college on the West Coast as the material of choice for teaching their virtual assistance class. More announcements coming soon!

If you teach a college virtual assistance class and are looking for an easy-to-use and comprehensive book and workbook to teach your virtual assistance course, please email us for details on our educational discounts.

IVAA in the news–outourcing your small business needs

Here’s an interesting article I found on MSN today. It’s all about how to outsource your small business needs and it mentions the value of virtual assistants and IVAA specifically. Enjoy!
